Um so I think one thing that is really surprising to me is um
How much our state of mind really matters and how much control we have over our state of mind.
So one of the things that I did in pioneering work on power was, and I did it for a very particular reason, which is that I wanted to understand what were the psychological propensities of someone who was experiencing power.
But if I made you the boss and me the subordinate,
You might act in certain ways because of expectations.
You're like, oh, I'm supposed to act this way.
Or you might act some ways because when you're the boss, you have m more things that you have to attend to.
So you have like you're cognitively busy, right?
Your mental real estate is taken up.
And so I was trying to come up with how can I just look at like what does it feel like to have power and how does it affect people?
So I asked people a very simple thing to do.
I said, I
either asked one group of people, let's say a hundred people, think about a time when you had power and you felt in control of the situation and describe what it was like to have power.
Or I said, think about time when you lack power.
um and when you didn't have control over a situation, what was it like when you like power?
