it's giving a lot of oxygen to conspiracy types as well who think this is just all a plot for the state to control us.

Now, I have grave doubts about whether that is the case.

Governments do naturally want to know more about citizens.

They do try and centralise information.

We had this situation with the public services card a few years ago where I think the phrase, I always forget it, it's mandatory but not obligatory or mandatory but not something like that, where you had to have your public services card to apply for, I think it was a driver's license at the time or something.

And that wasn't the way it was supposed to be set up.

It wasn't the legislation, but the function creep within government departments and civil service meant that it was just too, it was irresistible.

to require that piece of validation.

And there is an element to this that smacks of that.

Now, look, maybe we're in a new era and maybe the social media companies are that powerful.
