And maybe it would be helpful to contrast the case where the two things are going in parallel so we can see how weird the aspiration case is.
So if you think about, suppose I make a promise to you of what I'm going to do tomorrow.
And now it's tomorrow, okay?
What behavior on my part will constitute success or having done right by you?
Well, it depends on what I said yesterday, right?
So yesterday sets the conditions for
on my success or failure today.
Suppose I promise to come to your party.
Well, then I'll have a successful day.
I'll achieve normative rectitude or something like that today if I come to your party.
But suppose I promise not to come to your party yesterday.
Well, then success will be not coming to your party.
So we need to look to yesterday in order to figure out whether today is going right or wrong.
That's how promises work.
Aspiration works the other way, right?
