Well, more recently in Gondor, as the position of the steward became more prominent, and this is going to be an interesting little sidebar, responsibility for the stones fell more into the hands of the stewards.

That makes sense.

They're the right-hand man of the kings.

Yeah.

And that's also when the office becomes a little more significant, a little more powerful.

But it was still even later than that during the time of Pelendur, who was the steward to King Ondaher.

In fact, Pelendur briefly ruled Gondor in 1944 between Ondaher's death, well, the death of Ondaher and both his sons, before the council chose to crown Arnil.

That's the time, not in 1944, but later actually, 1998, that the office of steward officially became hereditary.

And the footnote to this passage points us to that moment in Appendix A1 on the stewards for the line, after the days of Pelendur, the stewardship became hereditary as a kingship from father to son or nearest kin.

So the house of the stewards, that's where the traditions and lore and presumably instruction manuals and warranty cards and all the extra adapters and plugs that nobody ever uses, that's where those were all kept.

Right.

They've got a really deep drawer with all that stuff in it.

They do.

They've got a junk drawer in the house of the stewards.

Is the extended warranty still valid?

It's only been 400 years.

I think we got the 500-year version.

Now, it's a long footnote, though, and it doesn't actually connect to Denethor's use of the stone or what Gandalf's thinking.

So we're going to talk about that in the postscript for these two episodes.
