One actually that the UK could be quite well positioned to fill, which is to say, what is actually happening behind closed doors?
This is innovation taking place behind very, very uh tightly sealed lab doors, either in China or the US.
And I think for a lot of governments, both the superpowers, but also frankly everybody else, we only find out about this when we f when we when we read the news that uh that that an AI model is now so capable it is able uh to sort of break out of uh some kind of containment once the the safeguards have been taken off.
It's interesting to contrast the stories that we're hearing about AI from China and the stories that we hear in the US.
The tone of the conversation in the US seems to be much more frantic, a lot more concern about these models going rogue, uh hacking into websites.
Everyone is absolutely pulling their hair out, terrified that these uh these extraordinarily powerful models are.
somehow going to cause extraordinary damage.
Now, the question I would ask is: well, if if that's the case, why is China releasing all of these models, these very powerful frontier models, out as open weight models?
Are they making a mistake?
Yeah, I don't think so.
I think the only read that you can make of this is that they simply have come to a different judgment on just how powerful or how dangerous these models currently are.
I think we've heard from James there is a
A a real sense of the need to preserve stability uh under the Chinese model, a real sense that we do want to maintain control over this.
Clearly, the cost of the prize that is, as James points out, you know, Chinese AI models being the default setting.
I I think that's right.
I I but I do think that there is a different perspective on AI.
I think under a Chinese view, AGI, uh the really dangerous stuff I think is further down the track than under the US This is the artificial general intelligence.
Artificial general intelligence.
The sense that like the the the real short-term catastrophic risks, I think my my instinct is that they see as being more remote than under the US kind of culture or the current US discussion around AI, where it is extraordinarily front of mind and seems to be the driving force in how that country is uh is approaching AI, both in terms of its governance, in terms of
White House decision making around AI releases, but also in the whole media discussion about what this technology is.
