I'm a Broward County native from the 8th District.

I'm a consultant.

I specialize in capital campaign management, and my firm focuses on economic development organizations.

I've worked with chambers and EDCs in South Florida, Treasure Coast, and across the country.

And while many people here are talking about the environmental implications of the decision, I wanted to make a case with a business perspective in mind.

From what I've seen and learned doing feasibility studies for economic development organizations,

Message is clear, small business communities do not want more warehouses.

Revenue from these facilities do not stay in the community.

Forbes recently cited only 30% of revenue often stays in the local area, and my clients have cited 10% of the revenue.

These facilities also do not create jobs that lift the community up.

They are few and often low wages, and frequently with external recruitment strategies that do not benefit the local unemployed populations.

Regarding the specific land, a recent study found that benefits from mangroves in the face of hurricanes, Irma and Ian,

were valued at almost $5 billion.

Meanwhile, millions of our state emergency funds have been spent on a detention center.

This facility, of course, has its own problematic impacts on our community, but our governor, as of this morning, is now saying that we might not get the federal reimbursement back.

So with millions of our taxpayer dollars not

meant for recovering small businesses and homes from disasters that we might not have, we should not be voting to remove this land that helps reduce the protection from disasters.

Finally, with the protection of these lands, there's opportunity for enhanced ecotourism efforts.

Florida Commerce cites that wildlife fueling alone brings $5 billion to the state and over 51,000 jobs.

So please remember, this is not a vote that will hurt environmentalists and natures.
