So by-elections tend to skew things a little bit when it comes to tactical voting.
In New Zealand, of course, with the two-vote system, the electorate and the party vote, you already have a split voting system.
kind of tactical way of thinking about things.
And the last election was actually the highest since 2002 in terms of split votes.
So last time around it was
35% of voters split their vote.
So they voted for a party and a different candidate from another party.
So it already happens.
So that's roughly a third are already doing it.
Will it be more?
Well, the biggest, like I alluded to, actually 2002 was almost 40% of voters split their vote.
But if we remember back, that was when National bottomed out at less than 21%.
That was Bill English.
That was the Bill English 21% absolute thrashing that occurred.
So it was a slight anomaly in that sense.
It is probably, and without making too hard of predictions, we're probably going to see in that 30-something percent split vote again,
So you're going to have roughly a third of the country, maybe a little more if it goes that way, thinking about how they might be a bit more tactical in their approach, whether they vote for, say, one of the smaller parties and then one of the, you know, a Labour or national candidate or flip it round.
Do you think we'll see, Michael, you know, when you've got parties who maybe they might deliberately stand aside in their electorate and that's to help a potential coalition partner survive.
Do you think there'll be any of those sorts of deals going on?
I think people have become a bit more aware to those now.
