And then we look to the sort of 20th century and we see how that was then played out through lots and lots of people being influenced by Kate Greenaway's work and that becoming this kind of very commercialised kind of style which is talked about.
Whereas as an educator in illustration, I would always talk about visual language.
Visual language as a way of talking to you, communicating with you, manipulating you and helping you to participate in things and either to control you or to give you agency.
So with Kate Greenaway, the illustrations are controlling and the poetry is giving agency.
Wouldn't it be lovely if it was related to something really important that happened in the past?
Wouldn't it be lovely to see ourselves in our present doing something that's related to something important historically?
Wouldn't it be important to know that what we're doing now is relevant to what happened to people then?
So our kind of love for the past and for history and for wanting to be present in that history is also part of the reason why that myth kind of evolved and why people wanted it to be true.
