When you're deciding what to get rid of, as I said, it's not all or nothing.
You don't have to get rid of everything and it's okay if you don't want to get rid of much at all.
But you might want to ask some of these questions.
Does this item bring peace or pain?
Does it belong in my future and am I just keeping it out of guilt?
It can be tempting when you're decluttering after divorce to just get rid of anything that even reminds you of your ex-partner.
But what I want to remind you of is that items themselves don't contain memories.
If there is a really nice piece of art in your home that you guys purchased together at some point and they didn't want it and you really wanted the art and you ended up with the art and it's in your home, the art itself is
doesn't contain any memories.
The art doesn't remember who purchased it.
The art doesn't remember what the situation was when it was purchased.
The art doesn't remember who paid for it.
The art doesn't remember whose mother-in-law bought the art for them.
The art is just art.
And you can choose the story that you remember and that you tell around that art.
So you might've said, this was an art piece that we got when we traveled to blah, blah, blah.
But the story might change and it might be, this is a favorite piece of art of mine that I've loved for 20 years.
And remember, possessions don't contain feelings.
They don't contain memories.
There might be items that you got as wedding gifts that you really still love.
