They've got a lot of problems.

Obviously, that is not broken down according to religion or anything like that.

But when you think of sort of white evangelicals, that does tend to represent sort of the core of the core there.

So I imagine there is

There is some slippage there.

But as far as the event itself is concerned, I think it's important when you talk about evangelical support for Donald Trump to really drill down on who it is that you're talking about.

And what we have seen sort of gradually over the last 50 years, certainly over the last 20 years, is there's been this sort of long, slow, anti-institutional shift among people who self-identify as evangelical Christians.

where they have not abandoned the label.

They would say they still believe in God.

They would still say they believe in Jesus as their savior, but they're not churchgoing.

They don't necessarily belong to a congregation.

They don't have specific faith leaders that they look up to.

They're not networked.

They're not in churches.

And part of what we have seen during the Trump era specifically is a lot of sort of politics sort of rushing in to fill

that void, right?

You have a large mass of these sort of unchurched evangelicals who now, when they consider themselves evangelicals, they sort of have this blurry, they're not necessarily explicit about this in their own minds, but really what they see as their evangelical faith is sort of this mishmash of sort of remembered stuff about Christianity and this sort of like folk religion of inherited evangelicalism, but that's mixed with sort of MAGA Republican politics.

And we see this more and more explicitly, and we see the party kind of more and more geared around this sort of combination.

For instance, I would have liked to go and cover this event yesterday.

I wasn't able to do that because I was in church, right?
