And so this third generation that my son and my niece and my nephew, we worry about.

We're hopeful that they won't have a blood cancer in their future, but we're thinking about what would happen if they do.
But we also think about all of the blood cancer sufferers who aren't able to speak up, either because they've died or because they're too sick or they're still in the middle of the fight or it's a long-term disease they can never get on top of.
And for all of those people,
I think they need to have the voice of the blood cancer community heard to stop these gaps getting in the way of better outcomes for them.
They have no choice but to accept these gaps.
And there's 3,000 families every year that are going to get a blood cancer diagnosis.
Going forward, every single one of those families, they want the best possible outcome for their family, for their family member, but also the rest of the family who have to wrap around that person.
They all want to deal with a health system that's going to be ready for them.
No, it's never something we've actually done.
I'm still not working a year and a half out of the transplant, hoping to get back to some form of work at some point.
But it's fair to say that over the course of the three years, it's just completely changed the shape of how we think about money as a family.

It's cost us from a dollar's point of view because so much of what it cost us is non-financial.
Well, just in terms of the long-term trauma and what I now have come to think about as a long-term disability that I'm grappling with.
If I'd recovered faster, the disruption to everything in my life would be so much less and to the rest of the family would be so much less.
It would be something in the rear-vision mirror rather than something that we're still grappling with.
Especially on the medicines front, we need the funding to be opened up for Pharmac to fund blood cancer medicines appropriately.
I've heard haematologists say that we're 20 years behind in New Zealand on that stuff.
