So if we look at how things played out from 2012 until 2019, the total dollar amount of credit card fees that merchants paid on Visa and MasterCard credit cards essentially went from being in 2012 nearly $33 billion to in 2019 being nearly $68 billion.

And that fell last year as the pandemic took hold and many people switched from using credit cards to other payment methods, debit, for example, as well as the fact that people in general pulled back on spending last year.

And that's because merchants say that many people gave up shopping with cash during the pandemic.

They didn't want to go touch, you know, ATMs.

There were concerns that the holding cash might in some way help to catch or spread the virus.

So more people switched to paying with carts.

And essentially what happened for many merchants

is that while overall credit card usage in the US fell, many merchants saw that a greater share of their sales was happening with credit cards as opposed to with cash.

So what that meant is that more of the purchases that were happening at these businesses over the past year were purchases that were resulting in fees for the merchants.
