They made all the federal civil servants write a once a week email explaining what they had done.

Right.

They never focused on the citizen experience.

And in fact, service delivery got worse because they just fired people who knew how to do things.

There's this kind of vivid example of it that they fired the only locksmith in Yosemite, and there's thousands of keyed structures in Yosemite and they got rid of the locksmith.

That's not efficiency.

And I think we should be thinking about overhead cost, right?

There's benefit cost and we focus a lot on that, but just how efficient is the government itself?

The government itself could be way smaller and much more effective.

We could have that kind of almost like libertarian small government if things worked more like Social Security and less like, you know, San Francisco's building permit office.

Imagine for a second that the government is a business.

Businesses are organized around selling things to other businesses or to people.

That is what they do.

And so everybody in a business is tasked with working towards that goal and it's measurable.

Are we selling more stuff?

Are we making more stuff and selling more stuff to businesses and to individuals?

The government agencies that work well have that same service orientation.

Social Security wants to make sure every qualifying senior is getting their payments and they want to do it as efficiently as possible.

The Postal Service has an obligation, if it's gonna take your money for the forever stamp, to get the letter out there.

And they really follow that metric, right?
