They never have to do them.
They either receive prefilled forms from their revenue agency,
And uh they can fix things if they want to.
But if they don't fix them, then it's just done and the government will take the money by direct deposit or whatever it is, or, you know, send you a check if you are getting money back for some reason.
We could do that.
The IRS would love to do that.
And nine in ten American households takes the standard deduction, which means their taxes are pretty simple.
And the IRS probably has nearly all the information that it needs.
you might have to say, oh yeah, I had another child, so I should be getting this money or I purchased a house.
So here's that.
And there was an effort, a two-year pilot program called Direct File that you could go and there would be a nice wizard where you could file your taxes, go through the wizard and file directly with the IRS for free.
People really, really liked it.
And the Trump administration killed direct file, which the IRS was hoping to expand, on the grounds that, you know, this was harmful to local tax preparers.
And so there is this laws of a component.
It would be more to do less, right?
Make things like Social Security, make the government smaller and more efficient, make the rules easier.
One thing that I love about this problem is there's like a million fixes.
This is entirely about developing a politics that demands it.
Because right now, the politics are a little bit screwy.
Responsibility for this issue, it doesn't cleanly get assigned to one person or another.
