who feel that they tried their best in really difficult circumstances with an awful inheritance from the Tories, who resent the fact that someone can waltz in and say, oh, you've not tried hard enough.

Quite an unfortunate moment because it is making light of something that the vast majority of the public are very uncomfortable about, which is releasing prisoners who have done things, you know, I mean, it's not the most dangerous people or people with the longest sentences who are being released early.

But nevertheless, the public is never comfortable with that kind of policy.

And then it leads you down the path of having to explain all over again, well, you know, we don't have many prison places and that's because of the last government.

And I think blaming the last government for the situation we're in, while in most cases entirely fair, is wearing really, really thin for the public.

The public don't want to hear it.

They want to think about the future.

So that was an unfortunate moment.

And, you know, it does betray a little bit of complacency, I think.

Probably Burnham would be, I don't know, this is just complete speculation, but I imagine that he would be very annoyed about that because he wants to do politics in a respectful way that doesn't kind of make fun of what they're doing or make fun of the public or take the public for mugs.

So I think they have to be careful about having that kind of attitude.

Nevertheless, Burnham has quite a strong personal brand and I think most of the public will only have vaguely registered that there's a new guy in charge and he's better at speaking and he looks a bit happier in the job as well.

And he has been quite a popular... I think he was the most popular politician in the country for a long time.

So I think that that kind of reputation among the public will carry him through some of these early teething pains.

And it does come up in focus groups still.

I sat in on some focus groups ahead of the Makerfield vote, and that came up when she was mentioned earlier.

Even though, you know, it wasn't always in entirely negative tones.

You know, people will say, oh, it's a shame because I really liked her, you know, things like that.

So it's not black and white, but I think it is tough because one of the big things that the public feels is that politicians are in it for themselves and the system's rigged and Keir Starmer promised to clean up politics.
