And it's more expensive for the hospital to pay for an uninsured person's emergency care than a preventative care.

And rural hospitals also already have tight operating margins.

There are already facilities closing or shutting down certain services, even as this is happening.

I'm literally working on a story right now about a dialysis center closing in rural America because they can't afford to keep it open.

Because a lot of people, a lot of the patients are on Medicaid, and the reimbursement rate isn't great.

So the hospital isn't actually getting paid for everything it's spending.

It's a nuanced issue.

My coworker did a story about, in some places...

rural populations are shrinking in some rural towns.

So there may truly not be enough people giving birth.

And that can be a safety issue if providers aren't getting enough practice with cases, right?

Especially ones that are maybe a bit more risky, then it can actually become dangerous for patients.

I mean, the fear is just that they'll have to reduce services.

But again, they're hoping that maybe certain savings from the Rural Health Transformation Program could help offset that.

I mean, there's a list you can find of certain hospitals that are at risk of closure, you know, hospitals that are operating in the red.

Yes.

I mean, that's more cost for patients if they drive themselves.

And, you know, the gas money, that's even if they have a car, if they then have to have their family stay overnight in a hotel.

And then it also really strains the emergency services response because rural areas also struggle with ambulance services.
