And even the reaction afterwards in the press, you know, many people were talking about how, oh, you should never deliver serious illness uh news over telephone or video.
That should that's like outside of the standard of care for medicine.
And you know, now this is
um happening all over the place.
And I think what we realized was there's this perception that there's a huge risk that clinicians will feel like they're making their patients or family members feel abandoned.
And we really wanted to encourage people to have these conversations, you know, regardless of the mode of communication.
I I want to go back a little bit to the building trust and rapport.
I think that's so important.
And I think, you know, even small gestures can go a long way.
Uh I spoke with uh a few colleagues who, you know, one of their common practices was if they saw pictures in the background in a room, they would ask, you know, the patient or family member, like, oh, I see some pictures in the background.
Can you tell me a little bit about that?
You know
Encouraging people to tell stories, learning about life prior to the COVID pandemic, just to get to know people a little bit more.
I think the more that you can show people that you care, that you're making an effort, that you really want to build a relationship, that can help you, you know, you get around some of the awkwardness that
you know, inevitably comes up in um some of the video conversations.
I mean, who hasn't had a conversation on Zoom where, you know, suddenly you're looking at someone's forehead or you're looking at someone's chin?
And and so I I think
People are more likely to be, you know, understanding of some of that awkwardness if if they can if they see that you care and you know, you're making an effort.
How about your experiences?
When you have video, you have a little bit more ability to pick up some of those nonverbal cues that we rely on so heavily when we're having in-person meetings.
