So these detention centers, many of the largest are for profit facilities and they have an incentive to spend as little money as possible on care and diagnosing care.
You know, when people come into ICE detention, ICE is, you know, let's remember that ICE is pulling people off the streets.
These are, you know, people who some of whom have chronic diseases.
medical conditions.
They may have disabilities, as we've seen, physical, emotional, psychological disabilities.
They may develop worse in medical conditions while they're in detention because of the nature of detention.
Or it could be that they have a chronic medical condition that's managed well outside the facility, but once they're inside, as we've seen many times, ICE takes their medication, does not provide them with the medication that they need,
and doesn't do really a full diagnosis and then doesn't really respond when individuals in custody are saying, hey, I have a heart condition.
I need my medication.
I, you know, I'm diabetic.
I'm whatever.
ICE and the staff there, the contractors are not responsive.
And so what that means is you're just setting up a whole system where people who would be fine under normal conditions face life-threatening circumstances.
And it's already cost the lives of
50 people, including most recent victim of ICE custody, which is Jesus Manuel Arenas Silva, who died during transport.
So we often think about deaths in detention as being in detention facilities, but it could be in ICE custody anytime.
So it could be in transferring between facilities.
It could be in a temporary hold room, as we saw in Texas.
It could even be individuals dying in a hospital facility where they're still in custody, but they're in a hospital
uh, for, for, for various reasons.
