So even this other immigration violator, even that category, which I'm using the agency's categories there, of course, and I think your viewers will understand that the criminal legal system itself is by no means perfect, and we don't need to accept just because someone has a criminal conviction doesn't automatically mean that I think they should be deported.
But the point here is that even within that other immigration violator, it includes a whole swath of people who actually have never even broken the law.
They're simply being detained because of the massive, expansive authority that ICE has to arrest anyone who isn't a citizen and hold them.
So it's really concerning.
In fact, I'll just add, you know, I was down at Capitol Hill yesterday in D.C.
standing next to a 20-year combat veteran from the U.S.
Army whose wife, Aurelis, his name is a retired staff sergeant,
Wilmer Trujillo, his wife, Arelis, has been held since June 10th.
She has no criminal history.
She's married to a U.S.
citizen who's a 20-year combat veteran, and he's trying to get his wife out so that she can come home while she goes through the normal immigration process.
She actually has a pending case.
She doesn't need to be detained.
And so that's the people that this administration is going after, not the worst of the worst.
Certainly.
I mean, still the primary path for people who are in detention to get out is through deportation.
ICE is still deporting a higher rate of people out of detention than we've seen in a very long time.
So can't sugarcoat that part.
But I do think this is really important and I'm glad you highlighted it because what it shows is that more than we've seen in a very long time,
Federal judges, not immigration judges, but real federal judges on the bench in the federal courts are saying, this detention is unlawful, this detention is unlawful, this detention is unlawful, and ordering ICE to release people because a combination of a groundswell of community support, along with the very concerned attorneys who are saying,
