But one of the great things about the great artists, it seems to me, is that however much technical explanation we get about them, the mystery never disappears.

You know, because you can say, Oh yes, he used all manner of technical devices to achieve this, but you can never name how he achieves the

I always think that every new invention should be given to artists because they're always looking first at what it shouldn't do, you know?
That sort of counterintuitive sense that artists have is actually tremendously instructive for interpreting the world, you know?
Absolutely.
Which cultural experience changed the way you see the world?
Because you've travelled a lot, haven't you?
And it seems to me that when you have travelled, you've incorporated so much from those different travels into the work.
I'm thinking that Florence and then Marseille and so on.
That there have been different moments in your career where you seem to have absorbed a tremendous amount.
And I suppose if you have a kind of mindset which is about learning and incorporating and translation and so on, then your mind is open therefore to absorb more.
In terms of travels and so on, you've recently travelled to New Zealand and I noticed that you use the term elemental to describe the experience of being in New Zealand.
Has that affected the work?
Have you felt a shift in the way that you've been using your particular languages since you've been exposed to this very, very particular kind of environment?
Right.
So you in a way it's sort of thriving by being self-sufficient in a way that you don't in Berlin because there is this kind of whole social network around the work while while you're in Berlin.
