At that stage, they were in a very different place to where they are in the contemporary Philippines today.
So that must have been a fascinating element of being an artist making work about a subject as it is shifting and gaining greater currency as opposed to disappearing further into the past.

Tell me about the balance between a kind of academic level research, but also that deep personal quality of your work.
How much are you sort of, in a way, consciously holding those two things together?
in your mind at once because always you you have that anchor of every story if you like in a personal dimension and that it seems to me is crucial in transforming what you do into art as opposed to academia
So tell us about that balance and how you strike it.
Is it malleable or do you keep it quite structured in the way that you approach each subject matter?
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
It's interesting that we're speaking at the moment when you have work in the Venice Biennale main international exhibition...
And I think this is one of the first displays where there isn't anything overtly about the Marcoses or the families that have dominated a lot of your work.
It's absolutely consistent.
But one of the things I'm interested in asking you is about how you see the work as having evolved.
I know you've talked about a greater tenderness and a less forensic element to the work, which I think is interesting.
Because on the one hand, yes, I can see that, but there is still in your drawing...
an absolutely forensic level of detail.
So I guess what I'm saying is... Maybe more so, yeah.
