Hello and welcome to another episode of the Language and Travel Hacking Podcast.

I'm your host, Benny Lewis, and I'm coming to you from the countryside in the northwest of Ireland in the village of Glencolum Kill, where the official spoken language is Irish.

Well, technically I'm actually recording this before driving up, so I can leave as much English behind me as I possibly can.

And as I get ready to go, part of me is dreading this coming week a little, if I'm honest with you.

Uh, that might sound strange coming from someone who speaks many languages and obviously has had many immersion experiences.

But I know from going to this event in the past that there are seven different levels of groups that you can join.

And I'm going to be requesting the highest of those seven levels, even though I do not.

yet have fluent Irish and because of that whenever I

attempt something like this, I can be pretty confident in knowing that I am going to be the worst in the room, with the lowest language level.

I could go for the sixth out of the seven groups, but if I do that, I won't be pushing myself enough.

And that's kind of the whole point of this.

And I know that the others in the group they'll likely be younger than me, have had Irish immersion more consistently, uh not have an interest in other languages to distract them, most likely, like is my situation.

And some may even work in the language or have consistent social practice where they get to use it.

They'd have very good reasons to put themselves in that top group, which I don't have as much to justify.

Justify, but at the same time, I don't want to be complacent because whenever I have aimed for something that is very comfortable at my level in the past.

I don't really push myself.

That pressure to improve has always been a big drive in forcing me to truly do the work I need to do.

And being in a class filled with people of a similar level to me wouldn't give me that pressure.

And to make matters worse, I've actually had no prep time at all.
