And this theater that I interned for wanted me to go to the Gay Games and hand out flyers to promote the show that was happening at the theater, which happened to be a concert from a black lesbian country singer named Pam Kansas.

And I was like...

13 or 14 years old.

And I told my parents that I'm not out yet officially.

And I told my parents, you know, I need to go into the city, into the village this weekend and hand out flyers at the gay games.

by myself.

And they said, okay.

They said, we're going to drive you.

And we're just going to sit in the car next to the park.

We're going to leave you alone.

We want to just make sure you're okay.

And they watched me hand out flyers at the gay games.

I remember vividly, it was the first time I ever saw a man wearing like leather, like a leather daddy.

It was in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon in 1994.

And I'm like 14 years old.

And this guy comes along in like full leather regalia, walking his dog.
