Information has always been an important part of labor force statistics.
But you're right, once you start chunking up a sample of 50,000 into around 90 regions, you start to get smaller and smaller samples.
So the estimates still perform well, but we have been doing work over recent years to actually look at how we can improve those estimates.
So a good example would be if you jump on the ABS website.
You can look at some products that we've released called the Enhanced Regional Labor Market Data Project.
And that's been looking at how we use.
um pretty clever time series models that will use labor force data together with administrative data.
So a combination of single touch payroll data from the the tax office, as well as some kind of income support benefits data from the Department of Social Services to actually model more robust and more stable regional statistics.
So increasingly that's how we're we're looking at not really addressing
deficiencies in the survey, but but reflecting the fact that people really want to extract the maximum value out of this data and often wanting to push the estimates really beyond what they're designed to be able to do
So the uh during the pandemic we were using the um the tax data, particularly single touch payroll data in a really live sense just to get an early read of um where the uh
you know, p particularly as we moved into those initial lockdowns, which part of the the country was the most affected, um, which industries were particularly impacted, which population groups were particularly impacted.
Um, you're right.
Administrative data can take a little bit of time because you're relying on those transactional processes, you know, the r the reporting of um of payroll data um through the tax office, and that can be
on on one hand, more timely than being able to process survey data, but also on another hand, can tend to be a little bit more lagged and and prone to those revisions at at the most recent periods.
So we use it at the moment as a as a source of confrontation.
We're also producing a whole range of new and innovative statistics.
So during the pandemic we were really focused on producing uh fortnightly releases of week
Weekly data.
So you had these weekly snapshots of what was happening across the labor market.
