So we are in the forest, right?

And we're under the coolness of the trees, trying to hide ourselves from the hot summer sun.

And someone pulls up roots from the sassafras tree.

And then they take the bark and they scrape it off and then they chop the roots up and they push it all into a pot over a fire.

And then the air is smelling like a mix of like spice and resin and a hint of citrus.

And this isn't dessert.

What this is, is they're making medicine.

It's always medicine, man.

It always starts out as medicine, man.

So...

For many indigenous tribes, this was a tool, right?

Like roots and as you know, right?

Roots and herbs and all that stuff, they're all tools and decoctions for fevers and rheumatisms and aches and pains and stomach problems.

So you drank this stuff because life was hard and you wanted your body to keep up.

Root beer doesn't begin because somebody wanted something sweet.
