From the standpoint of it used to be days, now we can do it within a day.
And that's an example where AI has helped us improve the patient experience, reduce turnaround times, and ensure the quality is at the highest level.
Yeah, innovation relative to the here and now certainly is a balancing act.
And I put this in the art category as opposed to the science category.
But there are a few things that we do, particularly with our discretionary capital investments, to ensure that we're not being too focused on the present at the expense of the future.
So as an example...
Each year, we allocate a significant amount of funds to discretionary investments, most of which are technology-oriented, just given the direction of the industry and where we are at the Cigna Group.
What we try to do when we evaluate where that spending goes is look at what is it in support of.
Is it in support of regulatory requirements, which have to be met?
Is it in support of our foundational technology, which is necessary to ensure we're providing the right care to people?
Is it in support of near-term growth, meaning something that we think will help to meet client needs at the next renewal date?
Or is it in support of something that's more speculative in nature and longer term?
So we look at the mix of our spending across all of those and make sure that we're not sacrificing the more long-term speculative items to meet the here and now.
So we look at the mix of that as one thing that is a cross-check essentially on innovation.
Similarly, we look at the time horizon for yield
on our spending.
And we want to make sure there's yield for some things in-year, there's yield for some things in years two and three, and then we yield for other things that's longer term in nature.
And if the mix becomes too tilted to the short term, we know we're sacrificing innovation.
So those are some of the things that we do from a portfolio management standpoint to make sure that innovation needs are being met.
So we certainly see advanced analytics and AI as being potentially breakthrough when you think about transformative technologies.
