Like when it hit minus 38, like I remember at one stage I stopped to go to the toilet

And about 15 seconds after stopping, my whole body started to shake from the cold.

You just weren't able to stop for any considerable amount of time or you'd freeze.

Whereas in the desert, as hot as it got and as hard as it got, if you had to take a breather, you could take a breather where you didn't get that luxury in the Arctic.

So you were moving.

And most of the days, the shortest I was out was 14 hours.

The longest I was out was on day four, which was 19 hours.

So you're running and moving and trekking and going through the snow for 19 hours and your body is just absolutely broken.

And it's the conditions are so dangerous.

You're never switching off in the Arctic.

And in the Sahara, there was times when you'd have like a flat piece of sand and you could move pretty quickly on it.

And you could let your mind go to other places and you could start thinking about things and you'd be okay.

You couldn't do that in the Arctic.

There was too much danger.

In the pre-race briefing by Chris, who runs Beyond the Ultimate, he spoke about that the difference between life and death in the Arctic is as short as 15 minutes.

He goes, you're feeling a bit cold for five minutes.

He goes, next thing you know, you have hypothermia or frostbite five minutes later and five minutes later, you're dead.

So between the point of feeling completely fine and perfect and 15 minutes, you're dead if you don't look after these things that are within your control.

And hypothermia was one of those.

So what I did was I had Murano wool, which is like breathable specialized kit for skiers.
