And yeah, it was physical pain, but I came back and made me realize that I could probably deal with any sort of emotional or mental pain as well.

Because when you kind of put yourself into the crucible of hell like that, where everything is screaming at you to quit, everything is telling you to stop, and you keep moving forward, you get a very, very different relationship with that feeling.

And it's what made it so hard.

And the reason I share that is because when you're very clear on what your end goal is and you don't give yourself a way out,

You don't really have a choice.

And when you leave yourself with no option but to succeed or to hit whatever goal you set for yourself, it's inevitable that you're going to get there.

By all means, if something terrible happens and it potentially puts your livelihood or your life in general at risk, yeah, don't be fucking stupid.

But pain goes away.

And knowing that, that in a week, in a month, in a year, it'll fucking go.

But if you quit and you stop, that never goes away.

That fucking will eat at you for fucking months and years.

I did a race in Barcelona in November, which was supposed to be a 76 kilometer ultramarathon.

And I timed out, I went the wrong way, got mixed up with the relays and went the wrong way and ended up cutting short at 52 kilometers.

And that fucking ate at me for weeks, partly because I was annoyed that I didn't read the race review beforehand, that there was a relay running in the same time because I would have been more conscious of it.

So I was unhappy with myself that I wasn't prepared as well as I could have been.

And I kind of rocked up thinking, yeah, fucking 76K, I ran 86 in the desert, I can do this, no problem.

But I timed out and missed it.

And that fucking ate at me for three weeks because it was my fault.

I wasn't prepared.

I didn't go in there committed to making it work regardless of what happened and staying on course towards the end goal of hitting the finish line.
