Okay.

And that's why central bankers tend to try and distinguish between a one-off increase in prices and something that's more likely to be sustained.

Now, there's two angles here.

One, if people start to believe that actually inflation is going to stay high and it's going to stay high for longer, I'm going to start to demand faster wage increases.

Or if I'm in business, I'm going to say, well, look, I think inflation is going to be higher for longer, which means I can get away with putting up prices faster than I previously thought because I know my competitors are in the same boat.

that means that inflation almost becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

That's why you hear central bankers talk about inflation expectations and their great fear is if you lose control of inflation expectations, if people start to expect that you've lost the plot and that inflation is not going to come back down to normal, that's a really dire scenario.

So that's one angle.

The other angle is when I talked about a one-off increase in prices,

That's not what we're going to have.

No.

Okay?

You get a one-off increase in the petrol price, maybe, but it could actually persist.

You could get another leg up.

And in the meantime, you've got the price of a whole range of other things that'll actually flow through.

You're going to have to pass it on at some point, exactly.

And you can also pass – and also you know that all your competitors are in the same boat.

So you're all going to have to pass it on.

Well, they either – if their income is continuing to grow at a decent pace so that they can keep up with prices, yeah, they will.

But generally speaking, this has been a huge –
