Right now, the central bank's in a really difficult position because demand has been growing faster than supply.
We still have a very strong labour market and now we've got this massive inflation shock coming.
Do you ride it out or do you basically say, look, given that I've already got inflation above target, I'm going to have to raise rates again?
It's a really challenging decision.
That's why you have an independent central bank.
Because could you trust politicians to make a decision that unpopular?
Probably not.
Yeah, it's a good question.
And I'll take a sort of a broad response to it.
For the last, oh, at least 20 years, as far as I can remember, people have discussed the prospects for the US dollar to decline in importance as a
as a reserve currency, as a currency of international trade and the like.
And it hasn't really happened.
The United States US dollar still retains its status by and large.
Now, the US still has a very open capital account.
You can move, you can trade the US dollar very, very cheaply and very quickly.
You can move money in and out of US financial markets very, very cheaply and quickly.
The US treasury and equity markets are the deepest, most liquid and largest capital markets in the world.
There's no great, there's no substitute for those markets.
So to that extent, the US capital markets and the US dollar,
still have a very dominant role.
