So I come off and Gillian says, go home.

And so that night she rings me and she says, we're offering you a year's contract at the National Theatre.

No.

I wasn't.

I do remember golden books that mum used to have in her.

And I loved them at 30.

But mum was busy.

Mum was, you know, if she wasn't playing piano at ballet class or cleaning houses or cooking for us or cleaning, and one lady bringing up two kids, you know, there wasn't a lot of time.

But we did have golden books around.

But I don't remember being fascinated by them or anything.

But I do remember at school,

the subject I hated most was English.

And I find it strange that my whole life's been involved with the English language.

But I hated it because I couldn't connect.

The books we had to read, like Great Expectations or something, had nothing to do with my life.

Poetry was like, give us a break.

And Shakespeare, you know, Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou?

Why didn't you say you want to come down the lane for a kiss and a cuddle?
