And so I went and I found an ad for a blue tick coonhound in Western Mass.
And I went out there, but I really wanted a red bone because I think they're beautiful dogs.
And so I went there and I talked to the guy and I said, well, do you know where I can get a red bone?
Are there any red bone breeders around here?
He goes, well, sure.
And he went to the back and he came back out with American Cooner Magazine.
You know, and it was fat, big, full of ads.
And it had all these ads for like,
coon hunters shipping sperm across the country to each other for their champion nighthounds and all this kind of stuff.
And it was, and all the different big hunts that were going all around the country.
And I ended up finding a woman who fought, who took her dogs out 350 nights a year.
I mean, every night she would go out at midnight and have a coon hunting contest with three other dogs.
And you're not killing the raccoons.
You're basically just
sitting standing in the woods for three or four hours in the dark listening to your dog's bark and then you're getting points for the first dog that trees and hits the trail first one that trees so anyway so i wrote a whole thing about coon hunting i wrote a thing about this old marble tradition in the south you know kind of all these obscure little subcultures that are still around that still have a lot of people doing them how did you hit on um
You know, I didn't, which is funny.
I mean, okay, it's not funny, actually, because it's typical for my family.
My parents are both German.
They moved over in 1962 from Germany.
And we spoke German at home.
