And my dad was a physicist and my mom was a historian.

So we had a very...

weird little academic bubble of the household.

And I loved Oklahoma, but it wasn't really until I started going back.

Right after college, I started writing for Oklahoma Today magazine.

They'd send me on these assignments and I'd write about Buffalo or Tallgrass Prayer here.

I wrote about the Tulsa Race Massacre back in 1990.

But I was, so when I started doing that, you know, I really started to think, wow, there's a whole

side of the South that I just never got to know.

In the middle of that, two things happened.

One, I was at the Environmental Magazine in Cambridge where I was working.

An intern came in from Southern Mississippi, and he told me about noodling.

And I thought, what?

And then I was talking to my brother-in-law in Oklahoma, and he said, well, you know, the plumber here noodles.

And this guy, Lee McFarland, was my classmate in high school.

I mean, I had been in school with him for like 15 years.

You know, Burkhart, I'll take you noodling.

And then, you know, and he was just a genius at it.

I mean, and I went out with him.

The first day I went out with him, I caught a 23 pound catfish on my arm, you know?
