Right.
I mean, one of the things I was thinking about was in public policy, in health policy, we often have these fights between
what makes people live longer or reduce their cardiac arrests and things that make people happy.
So I'm just thinking about like incredibly rich foods, right?
Like brie.
Like it's really easy to do a social measure about lower brie rate, eating lower amounts of super fatty foods, decreasing people's heart attack rate.
And it's really hard to assess
how that changes people's happiness levels.
And I'm not saying it's not important to lower heart attack rates, but there's a complex value trade-off here.
But when one end is easy to measure and the other end is not, the end that's easy to measure tends to auto-win fights without consideration.
And the harder to count stuff just disappears from our deliberation.
And that's
there's, I was on this, I was talking to this doctor on a podcast and he was really on board with this stuff.
He was worried about metrics.
And I was like, yeah, you know, happiness and joy is so important.
He was like, yeah.
And when you feel joy, we have a lot of evidence that it makes your heart pressure go down.
You live a little longer.
And I was just like, hold, hold, hold on.
Like if we are justifying joy in terms of a medical effect, then we have gotten things the wrong way.
