So I had all these experiences over and over again where I would be pushing back against a form of some kind of easy measurement.

So one of the origin stories of writing this book was a friend of mine –

Adrian Curry, he's a philosopher of science.

A bunch of years ago, before the current range of AI, he was like, T, I need you to come to this conference.

It's a creativity and AI conference.

And it was a bunch of computer scientists and philosophers who are making a first gen of creative art making AI, like way before the current gen.

He was calling me in as a philosopher of art.

And I was like, I don't know anything about AI.

He said, you have to come, you have to come.

I need you here.

So I show up and I'm in this room and there are all these people

building AI and they say they're optimizing for good art.

I finally carefully raised my hand from the back and I say, how are you measuring good art?

How are you operationalizing it?

What's your training data?

They said, well, we're just using the Netflix database on engagement hours.

I lost it.

I cursed from the back of the room.

And I said like, that is not good art.

And then they said, well, show us another large-scale accessible database with a better measure for good art, and we'll use that instead.
