So my example, since I'm an academic, my example is always like –
When I write responses to my student papers, they're rich.
We can use all the language from the particular class.
I can move in multiple dimensions.
I can compare their rigor to their creativity, to their subtlety, to their originality, to their ethical thoughtfulness.
And first of all, I don't have to push those into one measure.
I can just be like, look, this is really creative, but your writing isn't as clear.
And I can just leave that there.
And I can also use all the richness of our shared time together.
Like we develop a lot of language together in the classroom.
And I can use that sensibility about what makes a good argument or why thinking is worthwhile.
But that, I mean, surely, A.
someone from the business school is not gonna understand all those terms, and I'm not gonna understand their evaluations for their students, and it won't aggregate.
There's no way to quickly compress that stuff for someone in human resources or hiring, right?
A student who receives a thousand of those evaluations, there's no fast way to digest that qualitative stuff.
So the solution to this at the institutional level, says Porter, is to create quantified data.
And what quantification is, says Porter, is the intentional creation of a context invariant chunk that we keep stable.
So we specify something.
We remove everything that requires a lot of high context to understand.
And then we've made something that he says can travel.
