So like a letter grade, I think letter grades are different in the UK than the US, but for us, an A is great, B is medium, C is mediocre.
And if everyone holds about that meaning,
then the information can really travel.
A's and B's can move anywhere, people understand what they mean, and they aggregate incredibly well because we've removed all this multidimensionality.

It was mostly correct, but I just want to caution against one thing.
So I think it's not just that I can rate my students on multiple dimensions and then grades collapse that to one dimension.
It's that I can use language and terms that don't even exist on a spectrum.
Like not everything exists on a graded spectrum.
Not everything exists on a ranked spectrum.
The thing that I want to resist is thinking that what's behind – we give someone an A and that's a point on one ranking scale.
But in reality, there's five rank scales.
It's not that.
It's like not all communication exists on a ranked scale.
I mean the thing that Porter is trying to say is that quantified data is –
A summarized chunk built to travel.
And the way you make it ready to travel is you strip off everything that would give you a lot of friction when it moves between layers.
And then you have this slimmed down smooth thing that travels easily.
And what gives people friction is things that require context.
So it's not just multidimensionality.
