So I think an example would be if you just walk around sorting people via the IQ test, then without even thinking about it, you're carrying that bias in favor of the logical and mathematical over the emotional into your decision-making process.

And then the second thing is the thing that you're talking about.

So if we build, the way that Bowker and Starr put it is that when a lot of these decisions enter, they say information infrastructure,

They become background and they become naturalized.

We start thinking that's the way things are.

So instead of thinking, oh, we have this particular intelligence test that was built at a particular time in which we wanted to boost STEM.

And so we emphasize that.

We think, no, this is the way the world is.

Smart people are good at math.

Dumb people, if you're not good at math, you're dumb.

And so that kind of – that's a subtle social process by which a particular set of values gets built into a large-scale system.

And then if we're not cautious of that, we can intake that and suddenly be guided by value decisions made by some other person for some distant reasons that we don't even know is guiding us anymore.

Yeah, rock climbing is super interesting to me because, again, it's one of these things that I think is expressive of my profoundly mixed relationship with scoring systems because rock climbing saved my soul during graduate school, and it did so via an explicit scoring system.

So I was super depressed, started climbing.

And the interesting thing about climbing for me was I got the value of it wrong.

And I think this is an important ingredient in this whole story.

The value of climbing is actually really subtle.

So when I came into it, I came into it kind of in the frame of mind that we were talking about at the beginning.

I was like, I need exercise.
