We just always do this every day.

And this was so intolerable that we had to invent labor unions and regulatory frameworks just to try to make this something that people could tolerate.

The knowledge work emerged.

I'm like, well, how do we want to organize work?

We said, let's just do the factory thing.

Let's all gather eight hours, work really hard all day long.

Very suspicious if you're ever not working really hard and let's just do this all year.

It's not a natural way to work.

It's exhausting for people.

Of course, we don't actually work intensely all day long.

We use pseudo productivity to try to fill in the gaps, but I don't think it's a natural way to do work using your brain.

I think we should have a lot more variation in intensity on a lot of different timescales.

It's a much more realistic picture of how we actually do things.

Oh, I know.

It's so hard.

Perfectionism, for example, will rise its head really easily as well.

You have perfectionism and you have procrastination.

And they're sort of swirling around any effort to say, I'm going to work on fewer things.

I'm going to take my time.

I don't want to exhaust myself.
