New Zealand will be without second row Scott Barrett for their Nations Championship clash with Ireland this July.

The Crusaders lock will require surgery on a back injury which rules them out of action for up to five months.

He's been on a non-playing sabbatical since the end of November, and his club coach Rob Penny confirmed he picked up the issue during that break away from the game.

Barrett will miss the end of the Super Rugby campaign with the Crusaders, as well as this summer's assignments with the All Blacks.

New Zealand round off their summer tests in the Nations Championship by playing Ireland at Eden Park on July 18th.

That's after matches against France on the 4th of July and Italy a week later.

While they're also set for a four-test tour of South Africa beginning in August, it's hoped that Barrett will be back available for their tour of the Northern Hemisphere in November.

Staying with the Crusaders, Penny did say he was disappointed that news of his departure had broken before the end of the season.

Former All Blacks assistant coach Scott Hansen will succeed former Munster coach Penny, coming to the Canterbury outfit on a three-year deal.

The franchise had planned to announce the appointment of their new head coach at the end of the current campaign but brought that forward when the New Zealand Herald first reported the story yesterday.
