So there is a genetic component to mental illness.
We know that.
So if your child has anxiety, you might be more likely to suffer it from yourself.
And that's not a one-to-one relationship.
It doesn't always go together, but it's more likely.
And so often you find that young people and their parents might benefit from the same types of interventions.
And not only does that improve parental mental health, but it gives you more capacity to parent in the ways that are supportive and that we know can be helpful to kids.
And so absolutely, let's not just locate the problem in our young people.
Let's provide resources for the family system and school system that's there to support them.
It actually backfired.
Yeah.
So we know in all of our interventions that for young kids, you can tell them what to do.
You can implement interventions that can stop them from engaging in a behavior.
Adolescents, those interventions don't work with adolescents because they need to be engaged in the problem solving.
They need to feel some sort of respect and agency in kind of this decision-making.
So the science of behavior change with adolescents is super fascinating.
David Yeager has this great book, which is called 10 to 25, The Science of Motivating Young People, and goes through very clearly how the kind of top-down ban approach, even if that's the outcome we all want, is not going to work with teens for all kinds of reasons, right?
And so there's that piece of it.
