And worse than that, they have monetized the attention, they have monetized the information, and they have not been good guardians of the spaces where young people are.
That is just clear and it needs to change.
And I think that there are some really good things that are coming from this movement of accountability in terms of thinking about the change in the features that we're going to be seeing.
I don't think the way we get there is through banning for the reasons that we talked about before.
I do think the way that we get there is through cleaning up these spaces for everyone.
If we think about online exploitation, which is something that we all agree, there's no positive function for that on the internet.
Right now, what we see is a lot of attention to it.
a lot of companies being mandated to report that it's happening online and on their platforms.
But we don't see a lot of investment in actually tracking down the perpetrators or punishing perpetrators on the background.
So that also, you know, that's a solvable problem on the back end of hiring more FBI agents or prosecuting perpetrators of online harm.
You know, if we really wanted to make the Internet better, we instead of kicking off little girls, we would probably kick off adult men.
You know, that would immediately improve the Internet.
But we're not going to do that for all the reasons, you know, that that makes sense, that it would be unfair and that it would take away all kinds of opportunity.
And we wouldn't discriminate against a group like that.
But we seem fine to do it for kids.
And I understand the protectionism that comes into this space when we try and do this.
But, you know, it's it's.
It's just not going to work because what we'll end up with is companies saying, well, and they have said this because of this age 13, companies essentially saying, well, we don't have kids on our platform, so we don't need the special protections on data or content moderations, right?
When we all know and we can see the new data out of Australia shows that 85 or 80% of young people are still on the social media platforms, you know, after six months after the ban.
One, and this might irritate some of your viewers, but firearms are the number one killer of our children in the United States.
