Go ahead and get creative.
But before this task, she'd split up her 159 participants into two groups.
Half of them were to engage in that boring task of sorting red and green beans.
The other half got to do some fun bean art.
She also measured several key personality traits across all the participants in both groups.
Some students could use boring bean sorting to become more creative, but others couldn't.
And this was strongly linked to several of the personality traits Dr.
Park had measured.
If you rank high in so-called learning goal orientation, that means you enjoy improving yourself, learning, challenging yourself, and mastering tasks.
This last concept, your locus of control, is about where you believe success or failure comes from in your life.
Someone with an external locus of control believes success or failure is determined by outside forces, other people, your environment.
People who lean this way may not always feel that they've got control over their lives.
On the other hand, those with an internal locus of control believe.
Success or failure stems from your own effort, abilities, and attitude.
In other words, it's something you can control.
Now, it's worth pointing out that research on boredom is still relatively new, and it is difficult to show clear, quantifiable connections between things like boredom and personality traits.
While there were layers of experimental controls in these studies, it's still asking coders to subjectively rate things like levels of creativity, or asking participants to self-report which emotions they're feeling and how strongly.
But Dr.
Park sees a common thread at the center of these traits that seems to fit with this idea that certain personalities might benefit from letting their mind wander and explore.
So I guess the take home message is that if you are that kind of person, then long stretches of boredom can actually be embraced for you to lead to higher creativity in whatever work or pursuit you're interested in.
