So then you have kind of like the long tail use cases.
So donations, small merchants, informal sales where a static QR code printed on a sign is enough to accept payments.
So answering your question of kind of like why did this work so well, right?
At its core, it comes down to simplicity and user experience.
And you mentioned the user experience work group, so it really connects a lot with our work related to user experience.
So QR codes remove friction.
You're not typing in account numbers, routing details, or long payment fields.
you scan, you confirm, and you're done.
That's incredibly powerful in an instant payment environment.
But I would say that the most critical factor behind adoption in Brazil was standardization and interoperability.
So QR codes were introduced as part of PIX.
And I know we mentioned PIX a few times, right?
But PIX is the National Instant Payment
a system developed by the Brazilian Central Bank.
So it's the fastest growing instant payment service in the world, the second largest only after India's UPI.
And the Brazilian Central Bank also defined a national standard.
So it's called BR Code, and it was developed based on EMVCO specifications.
So the Brazilian Central Bank also determined that all institutions were required, all financial institutions were required to adopt it.
And also payment institutions, which are also financial service providers, but less regulated than financial institutions.
So that created a fully interoperable ecosystem from day one.
