Well, there's a couple of different strategies depending on what's driving the rambling.
Let's deal with that second one first.
When I realize that I'm doing it because I need, I tell myself I need to convince somebody of my opinion.
Rather than going into all of the detail, one, I trust myself that my opinion is strong enough without needing to justify how I got there.
As a 50-year-old woman who's been around so many different blocks, who's worked in so many different organizations, I now trust myself that however I landed on this opinion, however I landed on this perspective, it has validity.
And so rather than explaining all of the different reasons why I think what I think, I'll just simply own the opinion or own the perspective.
And if I feel like it needs a little bit of third-party credibility, then I can say, well, the research I've been reading shows.
The reading I've been doing would suggest.
You know, like just bringing that in a little bit.
But to be perfectly honest...
in my professional opinion is enough of a precursor when I need to think out loud before I can articulate what my perspective might be I've learned to signal that and so rather than just going off on the tangents rather than doing the big download I'll say to my listener I
Bear with me for a moment.
I just need to think this out loud.
So just listen softly.
I'll let you know when I've drawn my conclusions.
I'll let you know where I've landed.
Now, a couple of things that this does.
First of all, it lets your listener know that they can sit back and relax.
They don't have to try to interpret what to them might be a whole lot of different random concepts.
The other thing it does is it actually shows them your thinking.
