So really I I couldn't read or write when I started school and I certainly couldn't speak English, you know, and I think that's a common, very common migrant story.

So picture books became my thing, you know, where I can look at the pictures and try and figure out the stories.

And I I am still very, very attached to picture books.

I mean, I think and you probably the same, and they're just so amazing in the power they hold in those little short stories and the illustration and what a big story it becomes.

So anyway, so that's really what I was drawn to.

And all through my sk schooling I then became a much better reader, of course.

Oh, do you know, I'm gonna tell you this story and there'll be a million migrant stories like this as well.

One time 'cause th I've got four sisters and a brother, big family.

We were living in Redfern.

on top of a butcher in one room.

Not one bedroom, one room, kitchen and a bathroom.

And we were doing we were making s a recipe and I was in primary school so I must have been in first or second grade.

And it was called Apple Snow.

And they gave you a list of utensils and ingredients that you had to bring in.

And I took that home and my sisters took it got out the dictionary.

We had to work out what it was that I needed to bring because nobody could read the list and know what they were.

And you know, to their credit, the only thing they got wrong

was when it was a baking tray, they sent a chopping board.

Which I kinda think is close.

You know, so that's what life was like.
