But I think it works in the narrative arc.

So I kept it.

There's a reason why I've got a therapist here and readers here, because those are two oceans that need a continent between them, in all fairness to my readers.

When I began the novel, it was 1978 in my mind.

And so I was thinking about what is the world like in 1978?

And when I was looking back, what were the big movies?

Animal House had just opened.

And I remembered that scene where Otter is driving golf balls with one of his frat bros at the college campus.

And they hit the ROTC wonk in the helmet.

Or maybe they hit, I don't even remember whether they hit him in the helmet or they hit the horse.

But he's on his horse and the ROTC kid's horse bolts, dragging the student along the ground.

Now, because this is comedy, everyone's fine.

No one is badly hurt.

The ROTC kid wears a neck brace, but it's comic relief.

It's a funny movie.

But is it a funny movie to Mira Winston if you've driven a golf ball through a net and accidentally killed someone?

So when her older brother Spencer says to her, referencing Animal House, have you seen it?

And of course, she has not seen it yet.
