When I'm starting a book, one of the very first decisions I have to make, and this is true with all writers, is it a third-person novel?
Is it third-person omniscient?
Is it third-person subjective?
Is it first-person?
I even have one book that uses a lot of second-person.
I will only go with first person if I have a voice that feels idiosyncratic and unique.
Because the thing about a first person novel
is you're limited by what that narrator can know.
Unlike a third-person omniscient novel where you can be anywhere, which I think is one of the joys I had writing that prologue, which is where we began.
You are thinking it is a third-person omniscient novel, and then you get to the end, I know, because I was the girl who hit the golf ball.
So it's a surprise.
You see a lot of Mira's interior feelings, not simply because she's saying, I felt this or I thought this.
It's because of what she does when she's with some of the different older men in her life or when she is determined to see the bedroom of the kid she killed.
