And that stayed with me.
We reported on that particular killing in June 2024, so two years ago.
But it had an impact on me that five kids who do what teenagers do, went to the beach on a Saturday morning, should wind up being killed in such horrific circumstances.
Exactly.
It was not a direct killing, not in the sense of this little girl, 12 years old, having been shot or even dying in the bombardment, but it was still murder because Gaza was subjected to a total siege.
The Israeli authorities...
were preventing any food getting into Gaza at all for lengthy periods and at other times over the last two and a half years, permitting the entry of food only in very limited quantities, far below the needs of the population of the area, either in quantity or in quality.
Now, this child, 12 years old, as you indicated, suffered from celiac disease.
Celiac disease is not a fatal disease.
It's an entirely treatable, entirely manageable condition where a child simply is allergic to gluten in food and so needs to have gluten-free food.
And when the child, or an adult for that matter, has access to gluten-free food, there's no problem.
It's perfectly fine.
Now, during the course of the total siege and the siege that was not quite total, this child was unable to get gluten-free food, and so she became very ill.
During the course of a six-month period, she lost a third of her body weight.
She was suffering from very serious conditions.
Her organs started to break down.
And the medical authorities in Gaza applied for her medical evacuation.
There are very small numbers of people who have been allowed out of Gaza to receive medical treatment that they have been unable to achieve inside the Gaza Strip.
So the doctors applied for her to be medically evacuated.
The Israeli authorities did not respond, and she died.
