And I've probably become more aware of that in the last two major tournaments that I did cover for ITV, where they sent me home after the last 16 or the quarterfinals or whatever.
And in a funny sort of way, that kind of felt about right, you know, three weeks away from home and stuff and coming home and actually experiencing it
with your audience.
And that's probably one of the keys to commentating well on a World Cup final.
And it's become much more straightforward to keep in touch with the mood at home during the internet age, which obviously my career has spanned.
But back in, I suppose, 2002, when I commentated on a World Cup final for the first time,
from far off Yokohama, it probably was difficult to find out what the male was saying, to gauge that sort of populist tabloid feel for the tournament.
And it's important that you capture that mood.
That's your job really as a commentator, is to capture the moments, capture the mood in which they've been watched by millions and millions of people.
Absolutely.
And I mean, we've talked often enough for you to know that I'm indebted to the late Reg Guttridge for deciding that he was going to mentor me.
I didn't ask for it.
He just took me under his wing and it was tough love.
But he taught me 95 percent of what I know about communication and about how it has to be inclusive and about how assessing your audience matters.
Size and range is part of your journalistic job.
And he had this phrase, which he often used, that when the audience is larger than 20 million, there is an argument for explaining the offside law at some stage during the commentary.
Not that he actually wanted me to do it, but he wanted me to think in those terms.
